Here are the tweets from Texas A&M Head Coach Kevin Sumlin’s presser at SEC Media Days.
Sumlin on playing last six national champs this season: “We knew that when we took the job.”
Sumlin: This is a special year…as excited as anyone to be a part of the SEC.
Sumlin insinuates that A&M may go 2 QB system. Feels confident starter will be named within 2 weeks of season.
Sumlin: A&M quarterbacks will compete during camp. Team will name a starter a few weeks before first game
Sumlin on A&M offense: “Being called pass happy is fine with us as long as people want to defend the pass all the time.”
A&M needs to get bigger and faster on defense according to Sumlin.
Sumlin says he’s not a fan of eliminating kickoffs in college football. New rule is pushing kicks up to create more touchbacks #Aggies
Sumlin says it’s easier for younger QBs to transition to a new system than a (upperclassmen) type of guy.
Kevin Sumlin “We have a real emphasis on recruiting on the State of Texas and moving East”
Sumlin: “There’s no doubt that being in the #SEC has expanded our footprint nationally.” #SECKickoff12
Texas A&M Coach Kevin Sumlin asked about possibility of playing LSU to end season: “I really don’t have anything to do with schedulng …”
On #LSU A&M as last game: I don’t have much to do with scheduling. It could become a big game, but you create your own rivals. We’ll see.
Sumlin: “What’s my assessment? It’s a pretty damn hard league.”#SECKickoff2012
Kevin Sumlin on the SEC: “It’s a pretty damn hard league. … It’s a damn difficult league b/c of talent and coaching.”
Sumlin: Feast or famine defense. SEC size LBers. Got to build depth
Sumlin: We’ll be sure (Christian Michael) ready to go through fall camp. He’s been able to carry his lbs the last 5 mos. Coming along fine.
Sumlin says RB Christine Michael could have done more this spring but didn’t need to prove anything. Was careful with him. Smart move
Sumlin: “My realistic expecations are to win.” … Adds he knows what he was getting into when he took an SEC job.
Sumlin on how laid back he appears today: “It’s summer time. We’re all right. Plus, we’re undefeated right now. …”
Sumlin: “Everyone acts like I didn’t know what I was getting into when I was taking job. We were already entering SEC when I took the job.”
Sumlin: “We’re damn good in football.”
Sumlin on Les Miles saying MU & A&M “better strap it up.”: “I don’t think it was a derogatory statement at all. That’s a fair statement.”
Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin says he would rather play Arkansas in a home and home series rather than playing at Cowboys Stadium
Sumlin on A&M-Ark series: “I enjoy playing in Jerry World as much as the next guy, but I’d rather it be home-and-home.”
Sumlin on Ark-A&M in Cowboys Stadium: “Now it’s a league game. I think most guys would want a home and home.”
Up next comes The Old Ball Coach, South Carolina Head Coach Steve Spurrier.
Spurrier not backing off expectations, says Gamecocks goal is to win the SEC. “We also understand we could fall flat on our face.”
Spurrier: If we can’t throw the ball well this year, we’re not going to try to.
Spurreir: Connor is a running and a throwing QB. Hopefully, he’ll be a little better of a passer, but we’ll keep running the ball with him.
Steve Spurrier says RB Marcus Lattimore should be full speed this season after ACL tear. Much like Knile Davis, Christine Michael, etc
Spurrier: “We realize we aren’t favored for an SEC Championship like we were at Florida.” #SECMediaDays
Spurrier says he was thinking 8-10 years at South Carolina when he took job. Hard to believe it’s been 8 years
Spurrier: “It’s not a stressful job I have. I know a lot of these guys tell you how stressful their job is.” Credits assts.
Spurrier: “I think A&M and #Mizzou are going to be competitive. Maybe even compete for division titles.” #SECMediaDays
Steve Spurrier said he thinks SEC newcomers Missouri and A&M “are going to win a bunch of games.” Didn’t say how many years it would take.
Spurrier: I think when a sports writer asks how much longer I’m going to coach I should ask him how much longer is he going to write.
Spurrier: “Had knee replacement, and have the best team we have had in the last 4 years…I am good.” #SECMediaDays
“They’ve had our number. They’ve beaten us pretty good.” — Spurrier on Arkansas.
Spurrer: Arkansas has whipped our tails, and so has Auburn.#SECkickoff2012
Spurrier: “No, we will not recruit Texas…not going to go in and compete against Texas and Oklahoma and all them guys.”
South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier notes that his team has lost 7 games in two years – five of them to Auburn and Arkansas.
Spur Dog tip toes around question about JoePa but handles it nicely: “When he coached fb, he did everything right.”
Spurrier says having a quarterback who can run for a first down is “so important.” WHERE IS THE REAL COACH SPURRIER?!? #SECKickoff12
Steve Spurrier would have an 8-team college playoff if he was calling shots. Champs of 6 BCS conferences and 2 at-large spots
Steve Spurrier: “Marcus has rehabbed (his knee) beautifully. He should be ready to go.”
Steve Spurrier hasn’t won an #SEC championship in over 10 years. His last was with Florida in 2000
Spurrier: “Historically South Carolina has had some good years in the past. They have fallen flat on their face the next year.”
Spur Dog already thinking ahead to 2014: “If we can win our division and win the game in Atlanta, we’ll probably be in the Final Four.”
“That’s pretty neat for South Carolina.” — Spurrier on recent success vs UGA, Tennessee and Clemson.
Spurrier says, “Winning the game in Atlanta, that’s almost as big of a deal as winning a National Championship.” #Gamecocks #SECMediaDays
Spurrier: “Arkansas quarterback is very good. Tyler can really throw it.’
Spurrier on Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson: “Tyler Wilson is an excellent passer. He is very good.”
Spurrier on Ray Tanner: “We’re al happy he’s our AD.”
Spurrier mentions #Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson and #Alabama QB AJ McCarron as being “very good,” QBs for the SEC.
In the on deck circle, Mizzou Head Coach Gary Pinkel.
On Henry Josey, Pinkel says it’s a “stretch” that he’ll be cleared to play this year but “we’re not counting him out.”
Pinkel said James Franklin is throwing a football. TJ Moe said Franklin is leading drills, but “there’s no reason to push it.”
Pinkel: “You’ve got to work hard to get respect.” #Mizzou #SECMediaDays
Pinkel: “You’ve gotta go out and play. You’ve gotta go out and compete.”#Mizzou #SECMediaDays
GP seems a little more testy than usual. #Mizzou #SECMediaDays
Pinkel says the teams that are the most physical up front are the teams that compete for championships. That’s not different in the SEC.
More than the other coaches today, Gary Pinkel looks merely like he’s enduring this #SECKickoff12
Pinkel: “We’re doing things that we never thought we’d be doing with this transition (to the SEC).” #Mizzou #SECMediaDays
Pinkel: Mizzou will focus on Florida, Louisiana, and Georgia in recruiting.#Mizzou #SECMediaDays
Pinkel been at Mizzou for 12 yrs & isn’t changing anything in SEC. “We do what we do…not changing how we recruit or train our players.”
Pinkel on Saban: Historically he’ll go down as one of the great coaches in college football. And he should.
Pinkel on 6th player Elvis Fisher: We’re excited to have him back. Brings more to the table than just being a football player. #Mizzou #SEC
Pinkel, when asked about former Kent State teammate Nick Saban, said: “First of all, he’s older than me. I want to make that very clear.”
More Pinkel on Saban: “I have great respect for him, always have. He’s one of the greatest coaches in college football.”
Pinkel on Mizzou fans’ excitement for SEC: “They’ve become fanatical about it.”
“We’re doing great things to protect kids.” Pinkel was greatly affected by the death of player Aaron O’Neal. #Mizzou #SECMediaDays
Pinkel: QB Franklin will be 100%. He got better as year went on last year. Mentions last 3 QBs that are now playing in the NFL.
Pinkel: We can do a lot of different things with out spread offense
EJ Gaines: “There’s going to be a lot of doubters out there until we play our first game. I don’t know why there wouldn’t be.” #Mizzou
Pinkel: Franklin must reduce critical error young QBs. Also must pick his moments to run, not take the big hits. Again, improved as a passer
Several times now Pinkel has made variation of comment, “It’s not like we were playing a bunch of high school teams” in the Big 12.
Pinkel said after Saban’s 1 yr at Toledo, he called Pinkel to see if he was interested in job. GP interviewed & coached there from 1991-2000
More Pinkel on Mizzou’s move to the SEC: “Bottom line: You have to go out and prove yourself. And I’m fine with it.”
Pinkel: “That’s going to be a big story: Our offense against these great SEC defenses.”
Pinkel on meeting SEC coaches for the first time: “It was, Hi, how are you guys doing? Let’s go to work.”
Pinkel has “great respect for Arkansas.”
Pinkel says it will be a transition from Texas to Georgia and Florida as far as recruiting goes. #Mizzou #SECMediaDays
Last coach of the day will be Vanderbilt Head Coach Jame Franklin, coming up soon.
Vandy coach James Franklin says he remembers walking down radio row here last year and wasn’t recognized. It has changed now.
Franklin: I couldn’t be more please with Zac Stacy’s development. #Vandy#SECMediaDays
Vanderbilt RB Zac Stacy is clearly elated that Warren Norman is back & healthy. I sensed Stacey really missed their 1-2 punch last year
Franklin: The sky is the limit. We can beat anybody with the right kid. We have too much to sell. Not many programs can match our education
Franklin: “Tennessee game is important to our state, but I’m focused on (the opner) against Carolina on Thursday night on ESPN.”
“We’re very aware of the QBs in this league.” Franklin on QB success in the SEC.
Franklin: We want the whole package. Not just talent.
Franklin: “We have tremendous respect for everybody in this conference. If you play Vandy, you better be ready to play from begining to end”
Franklin: “Last year we thought we could do some good things. This year, we believe.” #Vandy #SECMediaDays
Franklin on Rodgers: “The light has really gone on for him” #SECKickoff12
James Franklin calls Missouri’s qb “cousin.”
“They were throwing babies at him,” Franklin on Saban’s arrival last year.
Vandy HC James Franklin refers to #Mizzou QB as “cousin Franklin.” Says he is glad player isn’t here so he isn’t “the other James Franklin”
James Franklin (VU) dodges question about “Cousin Franklin” (MO)#SECKickoff12
Franklin: “You’re not going to earn everybody’s respect in one year.”
